All cats have nine lives is a body of work that explores paintings materiality. The work asks questions about our experience and perception of time and space, looking at how painting is situated within the flux between the ephemeral and the eternal, the synthetic and the real, the virtual and the physical. This body of work explores the materiality of painting’s traditional fundamental elements - surface and light - expanded inspace. The works explore a range of material gestures; including materials painted in crumpled and creased states, discarded signage cut and synthesised in new forms, and synthetic materials that allude to screens which engage with the space and viewer. All of these gestures come together to create a discordant body of layers that disrupt conventional pictorial and spatial logic. In doing so, All cats have nine lives considers how we navigate through the ever shifting dynamics of virtual, digitised and real space.

Alexandra Jonscher is an emerging artist currently completing a BFA in Painting, with Advanced Studies in Philosophy at Sydney College of the Arts, The University of Sydney.Her practice stems from abstract painting informed by a key interest in colour field painting, minimalism, neo expressionism and pop art aesthetics with a focus on exploring shifting dynamics of perception and experience. Her work is defined by an interest in expanded semiotics of painting, exploring indexicality and subverting conventional methodologies, utilising interdisciplinary approaches across photography, sculpture, video, installation and performance to inform her work.
