As we lose the tangible relationship with the objects we created, the act of making with its ritualistic and repetitive nature increasingly becomes a romantic notion of contemplation, meditation and self-expression.
This installation explores the process of making as a notion of passing time in an attempt to capture time in its physical form. The work is inspired by the essay Praise of Idleness by Bertrand Russell who comments on how advancements of the industrial revolution are allowing us to live leisurely with the bulk of the manual labour stop taking up most of our days. As we lose the tangible relationship with the objects we created, the act of making with its ritualistic and repetitive nature increasingly becomes a romantic notion of contemplation, meditation and self-expression. The objects resulting from the making process become a tangible and tactile measurement of ‘time’.
EYE SHEN is an Australian based artist. She holds a bachelor of Visual Art from Sydney College of the Arts, Sydney University and a Master of Arts Administration from the
College of Fine Arts, UNSW. Since then, she participated in exhibitions, curatorial projects and public cultural programs.
Eye Shen is a collector, dreamer and a social commentator. Her interest in the act of researching and collecting as a process and her tendency to turn the unexpected into
something curious forms the basis of her conceptual work. At heart, Eye Shen is interested in storytelling through images and objects.
Eye Shen takes a critical view on social and cultural issues in all her work, answering everyday myths that everyone overlooked. Eye Shen’s installations are dynamic
investigations of a subject matter through objects, drawings, paintings, photographs and other inventions.
