Beyond the Surface sound composition explores the theory of the parallel universe, the existence of supernatural realms and other worlds beyond that which we perceive.

INFORMATION

Beyond the Surface sound composition explores the theory of the parallel universe, the existence of supernatural realms and other worlds beyond that which we perceive. It is crafted using five naturally occurring points in a three-dimensional space translated into musical notes. These points are taken from a scene located in Sintra National Park in Portugal, where I placed lights at the base of trees and intersecting branches and took photos of the resulting patterns.

The piece is activated by sound samples from the song, Triste Sina by Amália Rodrigues a famous fado vocalist. Pitch, tone and volume manifest from the translated nodes. Pulsing, floating echoes of sound travel through the space which exists in our own reality and one which is unknown and theoretical.

The selection of the song is based on its’ relevance to the location and culture of where the piece was created and for the adaptable and malleable nature of the vocals and emotive chord structure.
