Emma Constantine’s work is interested in play, creative movement and the human form. In ‘Body of Land’, the body as a form interacts with nature through creative movement, while natural objects become static dance partners and vast landscapes become a platform for the body to move in.
Having spent time in four Australian states in the space of five months, Emma had created a body of work that displays the vast beauty and uniqueness that exists across Australia, with each video capturing what struck her most about being there.
“Dancing with trees, crawling along rocks and rolling around in sand were some of the ways I made sense of nature, wanting to explore what my body could do within it. Through this particular process of interacting with nature, my body became connected with its surroundings in a vulnerable way and I became better associated with my body, its movements and the shapes it wished to make with the natural forms. For example, I would follow the urge of the body wanting to lie over a large rock, or wanting to wrap itself around a tree trunk. Often we live in our heads and become disembodied, but this process has connected me to my body’s intelligence and given me a sense of freedom and new life within it. I hope that the work has a similar effect on the audience: to draw attention to our relationship with the environment and inspire others to connect with nature in their own way.”

Emma Constantine is a British performance and multi-media artist living and working in Australia. She graduated with a BA in Fine Art from LoughboroughUniversity, UK and is currently pursuing her art practice in Australia. In2018, she completed artist residencies at Front yard (NSW), All That We Are(TAS) and Tanks Art Centre (QLD). Earlier this year, a short video clip from her latest work ‘Body of Land’ was shown as part of a group exhibition at Home@735 gallery in Sydney with the full series being presented as a solo show at Gaffa Gallery in December 2018.

Ira Ferris is a freelance curator, writer, podcaster, and co-founder ofArtemis Projects working between Australia and Europe. In 2006 she was Director of Folonomo Gallery. To date she has curated over fifteen solo and group exhibitions and has exhibited as part of Head on Photo Festival and SydneyFringe. Her curatorial interests are broad but tend to gravitate towards conceptual art practices. As a former contemporary dancer she is interested and inspired by somaesthetics and the way our bodies navigate and experience the exhibition space.
