CR*FT is not a DIRTY word, the inaugural exhibition for this collective, explores the individual practices of Shelly Jam, Carly Lay, Andrew Stinear and Nadya van Ewyk.
Shelly’s experience as a pattern maker informs the way she fabricates her pieces. Her work predominantly draws on her affinity with the Australian landscape. This affinity has inspired her to source materials such as stone or opal from within Australia, reinforcing and reflecting her ideas.
Carly creates pieces using a pared back colour palette and range of materials. She prefers articulating her ideas through texture, form and surface treatments, allowing ambiguity in her works meaning. Currently experimenting with patinas, carving and, most recently, porcelain casting, she creates one-off statement pieces and limited edition works.
Andrew’s approach to craft comes from a lifetime spent learning and honing various crafts. Through his metalsmith practice Andrew feels a connection with history and the line of craftspeople he has learnt from. For him, craft at its essence is about the handing on of knowledge and supporting those who choose to follow a similar path.
Nadya’s work is focused primarily around traditional Silversmith practice, whilst incorporating experimental and para-traditional craft techniques. Interested in the physical and emotionally engaging qualities of creating form, she produces unique, one-off pieces and small production ranges, using predominantly natural materials.
Showcasing the craft and craftsmanship of these four makers, this exhibition highlights the diversity in their respective practice. Drawing on a material palette of timber, metal, ceramics and stone, four different concepts inform four bodies of work that come together to create a celebration of craft.
BIO
Carly, Shelly, Andrew and Nadya completed their studies in Jewellery & Object Design at Design Centre, Enmore between 2012 and 2014. Since then, all four metalsmiths have passionately pursued their chosen crafts, going on to exhibit their works in numerous exhibitions.
Between them they have won several awards and been finalists in Contemporary Wearables, Graduate Metal, Emerging Artist Craft Award and Australian Jewellery Design Awards.
In 2017 they started the collective CR*FT is not a DIRTY word as a means to collaborate with one another.
