"Washes of fluorescent watercolours stain textured papers, their intensity emanating from behind layers of tertiary hued pastels and acrylics like obscured beacons of warning."

INFORMATION

Statement:

In this exhibition of new works on paper Cate Riley continues her formal investigation of materiality and aesthetics in drawing and painting. Washes of fluorescent watercolours stain textured papers, their intensity emanating from behind layers of tertiary hued pastels and acrylics like obscured beacons of warning. Velvety, flat and gloss textures are built up over the embedded stains setting up an unanticipated interplay of depth and colour relationships. As with all of Riley’s work, the shrouding and obfuscation achieved through the layering of considered, gestural mark-making serves as a greater metaphor for a neutralizing second skin through which audiences are invited to imagine alternate histories.

Bio:

Cate Riley holds a Master of Interactive Digital Media degree from the Australian National University as well as a Bachelor of Arts and A Diploma of Fine Arts. She works both individually and collaboratively in drawing, painting, photomedia, film/video/animation/sound and new media, seeking to find possibilities in the merging of traditional artforms with new and emerging forms. After a fourteen year stint in the national capital she returned to Sydney in 2014. This is her seventh solo exhibition; her third at Gaffa in as many years.
