Felt Spaces explores the ways in which a unique experience of place can be depicted through the language of painting, as a form of visual poetics. Through both landscapes and figurative works, a range of different environments are explored using a range of painting approaches, from abstraction to realism.
Felt Spaces has come about through an evolutionary process of drawing and painting most days for the past few months, observing a wide variety of situations and environments where people interact and engage with the spaces around them. In addition, I spent an intensive period of time at a residency in New Zealand, roaming the countryside on solitary walks, pounded by wind gusts, and raked most days by streaming soft drizzly rain as I listened closely to the sounds of the country and drew in my sketchbook.
In this selection of paintings, I have explored a variety of approaches to painting language, seeking to expand the range and scope of my visual vocabulary. The language of painting and drawing provides an endless set of opportunities for exporation of one’s own perception, in order to communicate something about human experience and being in the world.
Bio
Kaye Shumack is an Adjunct Professor of Design at Western Sydney University, where she has held a range of senior roles for the past 25 years. Her teaching and research in design thinking, and design methods for practice have been well documented, and she has an extensive profile in design research publications, addressing the role of drawing as method in information visualisation; and the importance of mapping subjective psychographic data around complex social and cultural issues. In recent years Kaye has completed a series of international and national painting and drawing residencies in Italy, and outback NSW. Prior to that, her photographic work was exhibited nationally and internationally.
