Fragile is a collaborative exhibition by two Canberra based artists, Sophie Bishop and Madeleine Ward. Through their work the two artists seek to understand the link that exists between our sense of self and the environments we live in and travel through.

Fragile is a collaborative exhibition by two Canberra based artists, Sophie Bishop and Madeleine Ward. Through their work the two artists seek to understand the link that exists between our sense of self and the environments we live in and travel through.
Madeleine Ward’s works reflect the conflicting feelings of displacement and release that are experienced while travelling. Exploring the switch from existing in your own comfortable environment to that of an active observer, living, eating, and sleeping in unfamiliar environments. She uses repetition as a way of recording information such as time, geographical features, distance, and experience. The wooden frames on each work, made by the artist, consist of different Australian timbers. These frames serve as a representation of home and the artist’s own sense of self, creating a grounding continuality throughout the works.
Sophie Bishop has created a series of silk screen prints that subvert linear perspective and seek to evoke a sense disillusionment inherent in the female experience and the displacement that comes from inhabiting an unfamiliar space. She is interested relationship to place and the details, colors and textures that render a sense of familiarity. She engages with her surroundings by use of the printing process, responding to found objects by retaining the information of the textures and materiality. She uses drawing and printing as a means to visually dissect, separating into components of form, tone, texture and line and recreating abstract fields within the context of the rectangular paper.
Artist Bios
Madeleine Ward is an emerging artist from Canberra ACT; she graduated from ANU School of Art in 2016, majoring in print-media and drawing. She was selected as a finalist in the CAPO Emerging Artists’ Prize in 2015.
She uses screen-printing, etching, and stencils in her art practice. Through working as a picture framer for the last four years, she has developed an keen interest in woodworking and has integrated this experience into her work.
Sophie Bishop is a contemporary artist practicing in Canberra ACT and completed her undergrad with honors at the Australian National University School of Art. She poses a keen interest in art history and conservation and an eagerness to gain knowledge and experience in all areas of contemporary art and design. Bishop works primarily in drawing and Intaglio etching however is trained in lithography, screen printing, textile printing, woodblock and operating digital ink jet printing. Her work often spans mediums into photography, ceramics and soft sculpture.
