Formed in 2015, the Australian Centre for Photography’s Darkroom Social is a group dedicated to exploring the potentials of analogue photography in the context of one of Sydney’s few remaining public darkrooms. Made up of members with diverse photographic practices and artistic concerns, the group meets monthly at ACP's darkroom to share processes and work in progress.
As a group Darkroom Social re-imagines the solitary, introspective associations of the darkroom. This cool, dark place where taps and exhaust fans continually run is taken up as a space to share in the creative, chemical, and material concerns of photographic image-making. The darkroom holds a rich history of practices and technologies that inform the group’s shared interest in the photographic image as a physical object. The works in Darkroom, Social. are unified by their exploration into the material aspects of capturing and printing photographic images.
