An exhibition reimagining the stories of such pre-loved haberdashery as doona covers and table clothes as well as old paintings and prints.

INFORMATION

In this set of domestic-scaled abstract paintings Cate Riley seeks to evoke a sense of mystery around the lost and reincarnated histories of homely objects and materials. Utilizing the shrouding quality of muslin as a neutralizing second skin, Riley allows audiences to reimagine the stories of such pre-loved haberdashery as doona covers and table clothes as well as old paintings and prints. The muslin itself, long associated with bandaging and healing, is applied imperfectly in parts, both obscuring and tantalizingly unveiling, through slashes, coy peeks of the original material; its wounds a testament to the living of imperfect lives. Her considered, gestural mark-making and colourization render the upper most layer of these images with scenes that capture bodily ghosts of the underlying objects, like auras that harmonise and seek to revive these discarded, domestic relics.
