The monochromatic paintings of Nancy Constandelia and Graziela Guardino collate in this exhibition as an exploration of pure aestheticism: colour, form and surface.
Simplicity of form is explored and created by each artist via the layering of colour, with the provision to the viewer of a purely visual experience of what is in front of them.
Both artists are interested in the conversational space between themselves, their works and the viewer whereby feelings can be experienced in their free and pure form. This results in an invisible dialogue and union between the three sides of this non-linguistic space.
Nancy Constandelia’s sequence of monochromatic works draw inspiration from her continuing research into the five elements of Japanese Buddhism or Godai (五大 ) : Earth ( Chi), Water ( Sui or Mizu ), Fire ( Ka or Hi ), Wind ( Fu or Kaze ) and Void ( Ku or Sora ) .These elements interpenetrate freely to form the body of life and they symbolise perfection of the total universe. Through her ongoing exploration into the materiality and alchemy of paint, Constandelia is able to capture and synthesize these intangible elements, creating spaces which allow the viewer to enter a non-linguistic place beyond our everyday senses.
Nancy Constandelia is a Sydney based artist who is currently completing her Masters of Art at UNSW Art & Design. Constandelia has been a finalist in various art prizes including the 64th Blake Prize - Director's Cut, and the Waverley Art Prize where she won Best Abstract Category in 2014.
Graziela Guardino’s series of black paintings explores the infinite research of experiences and dialogues between the artist, the work and the viewer. Guardino explores material and physical experience as a way of communicating and understanding the world around us. She is interested in the idea of the fragility of life and time, investigating the capabilities of materials as the limits of what a painting can be. Her work represents shifts between present and past, stillness and motion, disappearance and resistance. The ephemeral nature of existence in life and how chance plays a role in our lives.
A Brazilian born Australian artist, Guardino has exhibited in group shows in Australia and Hong Kong and in 2015 was a finalist for a number of Art Awards including the Muswellbrook Art Prize and the Fisher’s Ghost Art Prize. She is currently studying Master of Fine Arts at Hong Kong Art School (as part of RMIT University ,Melbourne).
