Inhabiting Place, Inhabiting space is a group exhibition of Australian-based artists who interpret an exchange between spatial locations and memory, identity and culture.
The participating artists in this group show provide their individual responses informed by their own connections and disconnections with the places of their heritages. Notions of travel, migration and globalisation provide a framework for the artists’ responses. This can be seen through tactile interpretations in which natural resources are reinterpreted to produce mementos. Natural objects are re-contextualised to investigate the connections between identity and specific locations. Other approaches include investigating the way in which the body acts as a site of exchange between our physical surroundings and internal perceptions. Landscapes are used to explore dichotomies and similarities between interior and exterior. Each artist has been selected to combine varied, individual perspectives on the relationships between the spatial and identity.
When curating the show, Audrey Pfister and Kimberley Peel sought to bring together a group of artists whose work was influenced by the places in which they inhabit. Ranging from rural settings informing a connection with the land, to high prices of inner-city real estate, to the transient traveller. Inhabiting Place, Inhabiting Space is an exhibition that seeks to showcase how an artist’s situation influences their work.
The artists include: Jun Chen, Victoria Cleland, Noni Cragg, Ebony Eden, Cara Hine, Zaiba Khan, Rory Khurshed, India Mark, Angus McDiarmid, Liya Mirzaeva, Lily Nicholson, Renate Reinmueller, Charlotte Richardson, Nick Santoro and Judith Torzillo.
