We should allow ourselves to open our views and understanding of gender, to see it as something that is fluid and not opposing.
Katrina Garcia graduated from National Art School in 2013. This is Garcia’s third solo show and has exhibited in group shows. Garcia also Volunteer’s as an art teacher and will begin to study social work next year at Wollongong Uni.
The show began with the intent to explore the influence of the male individual on the female. Garcia used her own relationships with various male figures from her life to explore and gain a better understanding of the relationship between the two genders. Society is slowly moving away from the idea of seeing males and females as separate or as opposite. The Feminist movement/s resulted in increasing equality to the female gender as a result we begin to see the male and female not as opposites but as equals. Focusing on our similarities; to acknowledge and embrace our differences.
Garcia believes we all possess masculine and feminine energy. Therefore, we should allow ourselves to open our views and understanding of gender, to see it as something that is fluid and not opposing. The result with her work is we see less a conversation on gender but the relationship of two people and the individual.
These images are frozen moments of the past, working almost as a time line. Garcia has not only represented the physical in these images but the emotional elements that are connected to the memory by using abstract markings, exaggerated use of colour, even glitter in some parts.
