Through exploration of gesture, form and colour, pure abstract visions are created that embody Syrmathenia Nicolakis’ involvement with the complexity of emotions and spirituality.

INFORMATION

Produced by a need arising from her soul, the artworks reflect a concern for the quality of inner life and wholeness, a search for the state of oneness with ultimate realities. The artist draws upon deeper and more varied levels of meaning focusing on her understanding of what goes beyond existence - merging the form with the formless, which she cannot convey in a figurative formal vocabulary.

The substance of these works reveal the interconnections between the material and the ethereal alongside the interiors and exteriors of affective and effective states of being involved in the development of understanding the inexplicable and unarticulated. The objective is to engage the viewer in ways that resonate as well as challenge their own emotions and concerns. The artist harnesses colour with intent to also communicate with the audience about felt experience, connectedness and perspectives of spirituality. Colour lends itself to abstraction through a deep sensibility that defies precise articulation or realism. Among these artistic responses to felt experiences and profound realities, colour becomes an instrument of composition. As such, colour underscores the artist's aim to reveal beauty and to shine a light on the invisible. The pure materiality of organic and inorganic pigments and their opportunities for physical expression through paint features throughout the exhibition.

Sydney based artist Syrmathenia Nicolakis is a Masters graduate of the University of New South Wales Art & Design. Across the media of painting, ceramics and sculpture Nicolakis puts emphasis on apparent psychological freedom and physical engagement with materials. Her works are predominantly large-scale pure abstract pieces which embody her involvement with the complexity of emotions and spirituality through the exploration of gesture, form and colour. Produced by an inner need springing from her soul, the artworks she makes reflect a concern for the quality of inner life and wholeness, a search for the state of oneness with ultimate reality - melting mind and matter. Nicolakis draws upon deeper and more varied levels of meaning focusing on her understanding of what goes beyond existence - merging the form with the formless, which she cannot convey in a figurative formal vocabulary. Her works are held in corporate and private collections in Australia, Europe and the United Arab Emirates.
