Artist statement:

Western Sydney based artist Ebony Secombe exhibits installation, Mediated Space. This exhibition explores the theme of mediated use of private / public spaces. The exhibition forms a conversation with previous site specific installations exploring themes of construction, urban decay & renewal, manipulation of property market values, housing affordability and the use and misuse of conditional or compromised spaces. Site specificity is an integral aspect of the work and in this case considers the use of gallery space as mediated space. Theoretically the exhibition is informed by the work of Rem Koolhaas on “Junkspace”, the “Broken Windows Theory” of James Q. Wilson and George Kelling, and Michel De Certeau’s “Walking In The City”. The work is otherwise influenced by the situationist movement, street art practices of guerrilla knitting and paste-ups, and many other contemporary artists.

Artist bio:

Ebony Secombe is based in Western Sydney and has studied a Bachelor of Fine Arts via Western Sydney University Masters of Secondary Education (incomplete) Via Western Sydney University, Certificate IV in Museum Practices via Northern Sydney Institute and a Masters of Art Administration via University of New South Wales. Interested in the politics of space, identity and the body, as explored through materiality, performance and installation.
