Photography for me is equally a science and an art. The miraculous nature of light recorded onto film or digital chip has always held a fascination and led me in my commercial and artistic works to explore the technical, chemical and alchemical nature of image capture. 

In this series I was drawn to the idea that the photographic process can be manipulated and made to capture parts of the electromagnetic spectrum that we can’t see with our own eyes. Working with electrostatic discharge, magnetic fields and sound generators, I have allowed these invisible frequencies to make marks on photographic film, paper or metal plates. Having little control over the ‘composition’ relegates me as the artist to the role of curator - simply editing and presenting the image - leaving it open to interpretation.

Artist Bio: Jon Bader was born in London and studied sciences before moving on to photography, film and television at Bournemouth & Poole College of Art. Whilst there he developed a love of Still Life and Food photography which he took with him to London when he graduated. In 1987 Jon traveled to Australia where, after traveling the country he settled in Sydney and began working in the commercial Food and Still life photography scene. Early adoption of digital image manipulation techniques in the 1990’s has led Jon to experiment with alternative image capture both in his commercial and personal works and has provided him with a creative bridge between his love of science and art. Jon works out of his studio in Sydney’s Alexandria.
