Yee's illustrations of marine life use simple block colours to highlight the natural design inherent within each organism. Segments of each body are extracted or extruded into a composition that is visually mesmerising, while maintaining a sense of the ornamental. The process of digitally manipulating an illustration into a mirrored repeat creates a visual complexity that draws the viewer’s eye into a central vortex and is reminiscent of the perceptual experience of op art. With the use of vibrant dye-sublimation inks, the final result is a psychedelic explosion of aquatic bioluminescence.
Yee's
work is strongly influenced by 19th Century German biologist and illustrator,
Ernst Haeckel. Both a naturalist and an accomplished artist, Haeckel’s
illustrations sit somewhere between scientific documentation and visual
art. His biographer, Olaf Breidbach describes his work as “a symbiosis
between decorative sketches and descriptive observations of nature…Haeckel
reduced the organisms he beheld to the basic pattern of symmetry that
interested him.”[1] It
is precisely Haeckel’s interest in organic symmetry that inspired these prints.
Rob
Yee is an illustrator and textile designer. Rob creates abstract organic
forms using pen and ink line-drawing and digital printing. His work is
influenced by an interest naturalist illustrations and his experience working
as a textile printer for the fashion industry. Rob’s latest work, Organic Symmetry is a kaleidoscopic vision of
underwater curiosities, combining elements of scientific illustration, art
nouveau, op art and textile design. Rob aims to create a hypnotic visual
sensation through the use of symmetry and interlocking organic forms. Rob
graduated from Enmore Design Centre in Design and Illustration in 2009 and this
is his third solo exhibition.
