An exploration into the Italian Baroque period of painting and architecture with a contemporary rendering.

As an artist highly inspired by Art History, I hope to capture two time periods in a contemporary abstract, yet defined, way — giving appreciation for the beautiful and vast way of art and architectural culture in the Italian Baroque era. 'Sanctuaries' began as a curiosity to the human need for hope and why it is often sought after in buildings such as sanctuaries. 'Sanctuaries' used to be built around that concept of hope from above which is why they were so elaborate in detail. The architecture used to be a direct representation of heaven on earth for all who enter and I want to capture that in my work. Hence the title 'Sanctuaries'. In my approach I have been looking into the floor plans or blueprints of cathedrals which have taken me back to the times when I was a child looking through kaleidoscopes at my grandparent's home. My desire is to keep the artwork representational whilst delving into the abstract qualities of my approach. I wish to have harmony and proportion in my works, with the inspiration of Palladio, a Venetian architect from the 1500s.
