Shatter is an exploration of the way our society constructs the image of the female body, from the fairytales we tell to the fashion industry and media.
These works started as images in my mind I felt compelled to transfer onto paper, before I even understood what they meant myself. They were fragments of stories, dreamlike, stored in my childhood memories. And as beautiful as they were, they were also complicated and terrifying.
Shatter is an exploration of the way our society constructs the image of the female body, from the fairytales we tell to the fashion industry and media. It is about the romanticisation of female pain and suffering, and the relationship between sexuality and vulnerability.
It is also about the way that even a female artist can internalise the male gaze, and what happens when that gaze is turned upon yourself from within.

Catherine Steele is a Sydney-based illustrator and designer based in Sydney.
She trained in theatre design at the National Institute of Dramatic Art, graduating in 2013.
As a designer and illustrator she has worked on major films including Peter Rabbit, Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant and Gods of Egypt.
Catherine works in a combination of digital and traditional media which allows her to explore the tension between ‘new’ and ‘old’ art-forms.
