Taken Spaces is a collaborative exhibition between Leela Schauble and Madeline Bishop. The works will explore human presence among environments from which they are either visually absent or uninhabitable, considering alternative representations of human existence and experience.
Schauble's video works were created on an artist residency to the Arctic Circle and focuses on uninhabitable natural landscapes and the results of human interactions within this space. Bishop’s photographs aim to capture human traces within spaces where people are physically absent, considering what is left behind in mere seconds or over decades. The works both aim to understand our impact on the world around us and our place among the grand narrative of our planet.
Madeline Bishop and Leela Schauble are both current Master of Fine Arts candidates at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne. Bishop is a photo based artist who completed her Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) at the Australian National University in Canberra. Since graduating Bishop has held a number of solo exhibitions including Monuments at Canberra Contemporary Art Space and 80 Denier which was created during a 6 month residency with Photoaccess. Bishop was a finalist in the Maggie Diaz Photography Prize for women and the Ballarat International Foto Bienale Photobook prize. Schauble is a new media artist with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Majoring in Painting (Honours) from Monash University. Most recently Schauble embarked on a trip to the Arctic on The Arctic Circle Expedition/Residency. Her selected shows include, Local Futures: The Culture China Young Overseas Chinese, He Xiangning Art Museum China 2013, Channels Festival with Q.U.A.D Projects 2015, Synthetic Species Motion Study No. 7 White Night Melbourne 2015. Schauble has been a finalist for Perth Centre of Photography CLIP Awards 2014 and Head On Photo Festival Multimedia Prize 2014.
