TESSELLA INSECTA presents graphic inspired fibre paintings and installations by emerging artists Kylie Walsh and Liron Gilmore using the fibre art technique of wrapping. Their work explores Gestaltian principles of visual perception by arranging wrapped tiles and branches into larger formations of pattern and colour.
Gestalt refers to how one sees the organised whole before comprehending the individual parts. The exhibition title is influenced by their coming together to explore this idea. Tessella is Latin for a small tile used to form a mosaic and Insecta is the scientific classification for insects and also a play on Insectum -to cut into sections.
Kylie’s work focuses on the endless possibilities of tessellate patterns found in the modern industrial world. Liron’s work is inspired by patterns found in nature, particularly the vibrant visual patterns displayed by insects.
Both artists employ a graphic approach to fibre art through 'painting with yarn' to create bold patterns that trick the eye. Their work aims to encourage multiple ways of seeing where each artwork can be viewed as a whole or a series of component parts. Like a mosaic, the totality of the work emerges when viewed from a distance, while the tactile qualities of the yarn compels the viewer to explore the works up close.
