The Underwood employs the motif of an enchanted undergrowth, in a dusty pink fable that evokes the artist’s personal experience of a queer childhood and coming of age and which conversely expresses universal concerns around our ecology and its fragility.
Eduardo Wolfe-Alegria’s practice functions as a personal expression of unconscious imagery, whilst simultaneously investigating tropes of the fantastic in art history and visual culture. Through this process he addresses themes of gender and sexuality, the politics of ornament, and our relationship with the natural world both seen and unseen.

In this narrative, hybrid woodland beings are engaged in various states of entanglement and play, as a mysterious force sweeps through them, fragmenting and distorting their forms. As the series progresses, this force, embodied as a sinuous curve, becomes increasingly disruptive. It could be read as an unruly breeze, a mischievous will-o-wisp or perhaps as something more sinister…
Eduardo Wolfe-Alegria is an artist based between Sydney and the Southern Tablelands, who completed an MFA at Sydney College of the Arts in 2014. He has exhibited in numerous galleries and has been a finalist in a number of prizes around Australia. He also lectures at the University of Technology, Sydney in the School of Design.
