[you] Caught what my eyes didn’t see, to show me later.
[you] Captured what my mind didn’t want to think, to tell me later.
For the artist, this series of photographs commences a study of the psyche - phenomena between the conscious and the unconscious: perception, intuition, dreaming and how these are influenced to manifest both individually and collectively.
These photographs present visual and visceral information observed at different times with or without awareness; familiarities that may then appear in dreams as very foreign ideas.
Bio
Jun Chen's interest in taking pictures began in the 1990's. Born in China, she then lived in the United States for a decade, moving to Sydney in 2011 where she is now based. Largely self taught, Chen's photographs explore a range of subject matter, the thread that binds them together is an examination of individual and social psychological conditions. Chen works mostly with analogue photographic processes and is currently working in one of Sydney’s few remaining commercial darkrooms, where she produces her own work and that of others.
