"Natural objects are cast into kaleidoscopic geometry, happenstance is arranged into pattern, and differing perspectives are combined to produce incalculable points of view."

INFORMATION

Following the linguistic concept of the same name, the Apophony series aims to explore a kind of visual intonation. Using a process of photographic capture and digital arrangement, for these works true lilies are faceted into structurally symmetrical wreathes. From the natural fall of light in multiple photographs, a coherent light source is then gathered to illuminate a form that hovers between idea and object, fabrication and documentation.

I’m looking to start a conversation about perception. Driven with a curiosity regarding the act of observation - simply, what we see because of how we see - my current work deals in conflated visual cues. Natural objects are cast into kaleidoscopic geometry, happenstance is arranged into pattern, and differing perspectives are combined to produce incalculable points of view.

I’m interested in the way unrelated, indeed often contradictory, concepts/entities can be locked into mediated relationships to produce novel results/behaviours. So, basically, emergence. Truth be told, the process of wrapping my head around the battery of philosophical arguments about this concept is ongoing, and may well be truely indefinite. Suffice to say, it is the variously characterised thing at point in the arguments that I find to be one of the fonts of my creative work: that mediator ‘relation’ making up so much of our world, while still being so profoundly debated and elusive.
