'This body of work aims to challenge the traditional imagery and concept of the “self” through abstraction and distortion. Each piece is an analysis of self, using an almost automatic and instinctual approach to painting and drawing. Various facets, both physical and emotional, are dissected and analysed to obtain a greater understanding of my persona.'
Exhibition Statement:
This body of work aims to challenge the traditional imagery and concept of the “self” through abstraction and distortion. Each piece is an analysis of self, using an almost automatic and instinctual approach to painting and drawing. Various facets, both physical and emotional, are dissected and analysed to obtain a greater understanding of my persona. The process of creating these works has been therapeutic and a way to deconstruct myself in order to reconstruct and rebuild my own sense of self.
Artist Bio:
Naveena Gokool explores the intersection of science and art to analyse the world around us. Her background in science gives her a unique perspective when approaching her artistic practice. Science requires creativity in the form of problem-solving and lateral thinking to develop novel ways to answer questions. Art requires dedication and discipline in order to create a cohesive and meaningful body of work. Naveena draws upon the overlap of these two worlds and mindsets in her artistic expression.
Alongside her scientific qualifications, Naveena has cultivated her artistic practice by studying painting and drawing at the National Art School. She has exhibited in solo and group shows in Australia and internationally.
References to artists such as Egon Schiele and Jean-Michel Basquiat can be seen in her strong line work and use of bold colours. The expressionism movement overall, is an important influence on the artists’ own visual language. Her work has been described as “Egon Schiele but Pop”.
