Exhibition statement 60 Dreams I wonder about dreams. In dreams, all impossible things come true, you can jump out of the window to fly, the dead come back alive, migrant friends congregate on laughing evenings, and even childhood ghosts can materialize for you.

INFORMATION

I believe that dreams many times arise from our internal struggles between unconscious desires and our efforts to curb them. There are so interesting, like a connecting cord with the unconscious. 60 Dreams presents my dream experiences in different colours and shades. As much as I remember when I was young, whenever I was with myself for a few minutes, I used to dream of being a different person who lives in a place where there are a lot of trees and I have a family free of fear. Psychological understanding says that dreams contain the impulses, desires and aspirations that a person seeks. I have felt a close connection with nature, and I started to paint landscapes and natural life forms in 2018. The project is a blend of human experience, nature and flow of emotions that connect with the unconscious. My paintings are best left to be explored, as different audience might be able to find their own connection and perception with my work.

11 FACES

We see and interact with different faces in our daily life, still each face is unique and can take us into multiple psychological worlds due to complexity of human nature. The faces in my paintings with their details emanate connotations through which we see and feel different experiences such as hope, sadness, fear and anxiety. The faces interact with us through soft blend of colours, despite somehow carrying distortions in shapes such as oblique, refracted, circular and curved. Different colours and shades in each face create a unique individual connection. For example, colours such as hot red, cold blue or dark grey might take the viewer to the world of confusion and fear. I started painting faces in late 2019 with an aim open to an unexplored bond between the art and the audience. These paintings capture the depth and intensity of expressions on a human face defined by distinct use of colours.

LIFELINES

When I started drawing lines, I threw the pen on the paper and it moved in my hand very spontaneously to produce a number of intertwining lines and curves. Every day we see a huge number of lines in different shapes and forms – straight, different curved, short, long, irregular. Each line in its own you may not be meaningful or significant, but by its denseness, intertwining and mixing with other lines and curves, it develops a meaningful formation. I have always enjoyed drawing as it allowed me to translate my feelings to set of interacting lines which could give me a sense of love, sentiments, joy, dreams and my own world. As I got more into it, I began to realize that lines can help us to understand the mystery of existence and life. Every human life could be compared to an individual line which is nothing but an abstract imagination that it is the centre of existence, whereas in reality only the way it connects and interacts with other life forms and the rest of the universe gives it meaning and essence of the existence.

Lines always hold a special place in any form of art and so have they fascinated me always as an artist, simple yet so inclusive. I stared these drawings during early 2020 and this project is an effort to capture my emotions and feelings that I have experienced with various relationships in my life, including family love, self-oriented perceptions and bonds we create with life around us. The idea is to connect through art the simplicity of lines and the complexity of human feelings & emotions which are dependent on the relationships that influence our existential experience.

Artist Biography

I am a Sydney based artist who moved to Australia from Syria in 2018. I started painting in Syria at the age of fourteen when I developed my initial love for this art form. At the early stages of my interaction with art, I got inspired by the artist Egon Schiele who had an influence on my style of artwork. My work as an artist for the last 10 years is in visual arts space, which primarily consists of paintings of expressionism and modern art style. My paintings capture on canvas and paper my experiences of life which can find a connection with the audience as they represent the growing mental health challenges & experiences of human life and how these energies can be channelled in a constructive manner. My work provides an experimental chance to challenge one’s perceptions, perspectives and assumptions. I like my paintings to provoke an audience to new and perhaps unexplored territories of their experiences
