"The artist draws inspiration from the meditative qualities of the sun, as well as a fascination with it’s complimentary but contrasting mark making, reflections and shadows."

INFORMATION

‘I Found Myself, Gazing At The Sun’ is a solo show by Harry Bayston exploring the search for self-identity through a frequent state of over-thinking and it’s resulting anxieties. The artist draws inspiration from the meditative qualities of the sun, as well as a fascination with it’s complimentary but contrasting mark making, reflections and shadows. Harry combines these contemplative qualities of the sun with the catharsis of mark making, as tools for self-reflection, navigating the excitements and anxieties of the everyday.

The show will be predominantly a collection of large brightly coloured mixed media paintings on canvas, which combine layers of gestural mark making with figures, symbols and text. The layers upon layers of varying marks push and pull at each other, reflecting and documenting the artist’s inner struggles, while simultaneously easing them through their application.

These paintings are a continued development of Harry’s existing practice, building on his existing body of work. They will be accompanied by a gridded wall of smaller, more experimental ink and charcoal drawings on paper. These paper works are a new extension in his practice, stripping back to only gestural mark making, void of colour. Like the reflections and shadows, excitements and anxieties the show is based on; this gridded wall of drawings will compliment and contrast the surrounding paintings, expanding and further emphasizing the show’s themes.

The title, ‘I Found Myself, Gazing At The Sun’, references both the literal act of noticing one's self gazing at the sun and the symbolic theme of reflection in search of self.
