‘i think maybe i’ll try to start figuring it out now’ serves as a form of self-evaluation, a collection of words seeking to decide where the artist is, and where they could be heading. This exhibition takes a step into a ‘quieter’ place, away from Brady’s often loud and angst driven practice. Printmaking, drawing and installation are employed as a means of attempting vulnerability - not directed towards anyone in particular, just trying. Contextually, the works are vague and non-linear, with nothing seeming to fit into place - ambiguous moments of thought that only the artist can locate.
This delicately haphazard environment invites without welcoming the audience. Intimate moments of thought are scribbled and scribed onto various surfaces trying to confess, but are often riddled with syntaxical errors and semantic ambiguity removing the potential for understanding. These thoughts are proposed, but not resolved.
Drawing from her experiences of mental health, Brady’s practice explores language as a failing system that struggles to coherently articulate the translucency of internal thoughts. Her work is self-reflexive, seeking to communicate personal monologues that are uncomfortable and confusing; a representation of thoughts, emotions, ideas, memories and feelings that are difficult to express. Brady's works are process driven in their making, mirroring anxious moments of over-thought. Her work is not intended as a coping mechanism, nor a clear articulation of these moments, but simply an acknowledgement of discomfort and disruption in the translation of internalised thoughts.

Jennifer Brady is a Sydney based emerging artist. In 2018 she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at the University of New South Wales - Art & Design, specialising in Drawing and Photography. Primarily engaging with language and ‘word art’, Brady has been actively involved in group shows since mid 2016 in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. 2018 saw Brady execute her first solo exhibition ‘Betwixt and Between’ at Gaffa Gallery, Sydney; and exhibit at Brunswick Street Gallery, Airspace Projects, Bedrock Collective’s Long Weekend, and Women In Music Empowerment Day among others. Her practice has recently developed into curatorial realms, co-curating the outdoor exhibition ‘Piece of Mind’ (2018) at Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studios with Yanchen Li for Mental Health Month, and curating the group shows ‘d.i.why?’ (2019) at Kudos Gallery, Paddington and ‘Crossword’ (2019) at AD Space, UNSW Art & Design, Paddington. Brady was a finalist for the Lethbridge 10,000 Small Scale Art Award (2017), Jenny Birt Award (2018), and the Kudos Emerging Artist and Designer Award (2018). In 2019 she exhibited her second solo exhibition, ‘This is a Conversation Piece’ at 107 Projects collaboratively with emerging curator Sarah Rose. Brady is a co-founder of Sydney-based printmaking collective, More Than Reproduction - a platform seeking to celebrate and promote female-identifying artists, curators and creatives with a particular focus on printmaking practices.
