Ivan is a series of performance pieces which investigate trauma and memory. These experiences and fractured memories are encoded in actions as intense, specific visual images and examined in the performance space. The actions both exorcise and abstract memories of trauma. Internal experience is re-configured as external experience in order to reclaim the body.

INFORMATION

The exhibition title is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the artists aggressor through historical figures such as Ivan the Terrible and Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. The historical narratives of both figures serve as a vehicle to address the complicated and often difficult landscape survivors navigate in bringing forth allegations.

Emma Varker is a performance artist and filmmaker. She has exhibited in Australia and across Europe. Her performance work often examines notions of ritual, transgression and gender. Since 2017, Varker has explored the intersections between experimental film, cinema and live performance.
