Whilst often overshadowed and ignored, place memories of familiar routes can be found in incidental and often forgotten sites as forms of memorial around the city that provide vestiges of the city’s liminal history, providing links between past, present and future.
Based on the harbour, the inner city and outreaching inner western suburbs, this drawing installation composes a series of narratives as ruptures of the real, exposing tears or gaps in the composite media memory of a sleek sparkling harbour city. As Sydney continues to be re-shaped by large building and infrastructure projects, urban spaces are increasingly contested and familiar place memories can and do, disappear overnight as infrastructure juggernauts roll forward. The work seeks to expose the city’s porous qualities through exploring incidental urban traces and resonances. Each series of drawings locates connections across place and its occupation, that work as networks of moving and static signs, as evidence of the past linked to the present. These works are forms of memorial to significant and historical incidental places. These spaces occupy conceptual, as well as physical and emotional ground in our constantly moving everyday lives.
Kaye Shumack is a Sydney-based artist exploring place, space and memory in urban settings through drawing and installation narrative formats. Kaye studied at Sydney College of Arts and has exhibited in national and international contexts.
