More than 90 per cent of Australian businesses are small businesses. They account for a third of Australia’s GDP, employ more than 2 out of every 5 people in Australia’s workforce, and pay about 12 per cent of total company tax revenue.
Xero, the global small business platform presents Paper to Pixels celebrating the nation’s incredibly diverse 2.2 million small businesses and their owners.

This exhibition takes an intimate look at the digitisation of the backbone of our economy. Each collection of images features a different small business and its owner, capturing their reasons for being, as well as the business administration that makes its continued existence possible.
Recent research by Xero shows that technology can play a huge role in reducing the impact of administration and increasing productivity for small business owners. Despite this, one in five small business owners still use pen and paper to manage their payroll, likely contributing to the nearly 2 million payroll errors made every year by small businesses.
As part of this changing picture, legislation passed in February 2019 will make it mandatory for small businesses to adopt digital payroll reporting systems. Xero’s research shows this could unlock an additional 1 million hours of business productivity per week, boosting the economy by over $1.3 billion annually.
The evolution from paper to digital is reflected in Lauren’s portraits of Australian small business owners from around the country, captured in their natural habitats as they power our economy and employment.
