This body of work has been completed on Gadigal land of the Eora nation, during the isolation period of the Covid 19 pandemic, sovereignty was never ceded.
These slow, meditative textiles are exercises in intuitive collage. The works memorialize quiet moments of the everyday, and attempt to represent the physical distance and mental intimacy of our communities. Through the stitching together of shape and colour, new formations are found and healed. This focus on textiles comes from an acknowledgement of their passive presence in most aspects of life, whether through clothing, bedding, or more recently, masking. The piecing together and mending of textiles, allows for a meditative and physical practice of repairing, while being surrounded by the chaos of global events.
Olivia Arnold is an emerging artist from Sydney, Australia. Her multidisciplinary practice spans from textiles and printmaking, to sculpture and installation. Arnold completed her MFA at the National Art School (Sydney) in 2018, and has continued a trajectory of meditative artwork concerned with nostalgia, environmentalism, intersectional feminism and an appreciation of form in its own right. Arnold’s work is evocative of the quiet, meditative moments found in our environment; in both interior space and the natural world.
Arnold’s work has been featured in various exhibitions at GAFFA Gallery, her last solo exhibition was in April 2019. Her work has also been featured at Kensington Contemporary (Sydney), National Art School (Sydney), Factory 49 (Sydney), First Draft (Sydney), Scratch Art Space (Sydney), and in January 2020 she undertook a residency and exhibition at Factory 49 (Paris, France). Her work is held in the National Art School archive and has been featured in the 2020 Women’s issue of Create! magazine.
