“Remote Control”is the shifting from the attentive, reactive document of drawing through the visual screen. Where the viewers’ attention is drawn now to the proximity, and immediacy of contradictions. Place though distant, casts a vista in front of us through time and a sense of collective memory."

Exhibition Statement

In the past two years, we have all simultaneously experienced a contraction of our horizons into the domestic and out through the digital. Unable to travel, Australian based Irish artist Ronan Lane developed a new series of works that enabled him to translate and transport the intimate. Though initially these works were private explorations of place and memory, they have become statements that can freely navigate.

“Remote Control”is the shifting from the attentive, reactive document of drawing through the visual screen. Where the viewers’ attention is drawn now to the proximity, and immediacy of contradictions. Place though distant, casts a vista in front of us through time and a sense of collective memory."

Control comes from that moment of exploration; of trying to understand their surroundings.Through drawing Ronan redefines the natural and urban environment. Taking the abstract and allegorical, describing the rushing wind and poetry of barren spaces or heat from urban static.

Movement, and proximity became pivotal points. Out of this, Ronan delved into his investigative drawings. Pieces that were responses to physical phenomena of place across continents. For “Remote Control” these intimate watercolour and pencil drawings have been reimagined as a limited edition of prints, which are then held up by their owners.

The works explore memory, place, myth and what remains.

Artist Statement

Ronan Lane is an Irish born painter now based in Australia.

His work focuses on painting and drawing. It pays particular attention to the stories, or myths that stay with us in a temporal miasma of cultural memory in conjunction with an investigation into the physicality of painterly space.

Ronan has a Diploma in Fine Art (Painting) from the Crawford College of Art and Design (Ireland). He has a Bachelors of Fine Art from the Aki, ArtEZ (the Netherlands). Currently he is a PhD Candidate at Curtin University (Perth).

Ronan has exhibited in Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, and Australia. Over the past 20 years he has been involved with artist initiatives, residencies, and projects throughout Europe.

This is one of a series of international exhibitions consisting of photographs of people holding up one of an edition of prints in their homes. Each sale of a print includes detailed instructions of how to photograph the work. As the project develops, the series of exhibited photos will change. The exhibition aims to highlight aspects of a shared experience. A poetic resolve. One that spans the spheres of place and culture. This balance is held tentatively and proudly up by the holder.
