Urns of 2020 brings together 30 urns, 30 artists and 30 charities. Each artist was given a plain white cremation urn and asked to create a piece of art that commemorates what “Rising from the Ashes” means to them.
Urns of 2020 brings together 30 urns, 30 artists and 30 charities. Each artist was given a plain white cremation urn and asked to create a piece of art that commemorates what “Rising from the Ashes” means to them. Each artist will share their message of hope, inspiration and creativity on their urn.
The exhibition is the brainchild of Liz Amalfi, from Ionica, a family-run wholesale company that imports coffins from Italy since 1990. During a COVID clean-up in their warehouse Liz discovered some funeral urns her late father had imported from Italy many years ago that had never been used.
We all have our own personal 2020 story. URNS of 2020 is about honouring the year that was. A year of grief, loss, and adversity on a global scale. With the new year approaching. May we all 'Rise from the Ashes', to bring messages of hope, peace, unity and remembrance. In reflecting on the year that was from the Australian bushfires, to Covid, births, deaths, global movements, awakenings and so much more. 2020 was a year of transformation!
From local, regional, interstate to international artists, from painters, ceramicists to sound and jewellery artists. The premise of this exhibition is to collaborate a conscious collective and creatively bridge the gap between the funeral industry and the world of art through the 30 vessels.
All urns will be silently auctioned throughout the exhibition with 100% of proceeds going to the charity of the artist’s choice.
A panel of judges will award an URN PRIZE of $3000 donated by WN Bull Funerals Newtown.
The judges are Marcella Zemanek (widow of radio and television broadcaster Stan Zemanek), Melanie Gray (Archibald Prize Finalist 2020) and Marcella Belcastro (Manager from WN Bull Funerals).
The process of bringing the exhibition to life will be captured in a documentary produced by Reel Life Events, which will feature an exclusive look at a number of artists sharing their creative approach to the project and speaking about their chosen charity, lifting the lid on the experience.
