“My work is about exploring consciousness, the mind in all its capabilities. The human being as a whole, connected, living, breathing manifestation of life, mind, body, spirit. I imagine how the energy moves through the mind, creating wave-like forces, when depicted in the art making process. I am working on an intuitive level and the subconscious."
Emerging Artist Solo Show - The Seen and the Unseen - Anna Tierney
An exhibition of my projects, experimentations and ideas that led me to fulfill my role as an artist and find my way into abstract painting. I am passionate about photography, painting and installation and I combine all those elements to explore the seen and the unseen worlds. The world that we experience and we can prove that we can see, but also the one that we can sense through our sixth sense, our intuition and our dreams. Both of these worlds and realities and interconnect. We can experience both simultaneously, by being open to the unknown and the serendipity that this allows us to experience. It's the first time after graduating recently from the National Art School for me to have asolo show. I exhibited in my early career in Greece and my arts practice time has flourished here in Australia, after a few years of inactivity when becoming a mum. Being an artist is my identity and I reclaimed my identity. My spiritual practice of meditation has influenced my work and I explore different ways of seeing and creating art. This show is putting together my works that I created during my studies at NAS, that have not previously shown. It is a large number of works that sing together like being in an orchestra and need to be shown. I have the vision. The installations, paintings create a sense of awe and wonder and have powerful qualities within them. The power that lies within us, but few people acknowledge.
The Seen and the Unseen a series of paintings, collages, sculptures and installations from my third and second year painting project during my Bachelor of Fine Art at the National Art School. My project is concerned with the Spiritual in Abstract Art, the Sacred Feminine, the Interconnectivity of all things in the Universe, which is a stateof consciousness that can be reached through spiritual practices like meditation.
During the lockdown I had some deep introspection and I have been asking myself, who I want to be as an artist. I realised that I have always had a keen interest in the spiritual since a very young age and I always have been drawing and painting in an abstract way, that was led by intuition and dreams. Intuition and dreams are away of connecting with the spiritual world, to a higher universal intelligence. It became clear to me that the spiritual will be my focus on my investigation.
The key artist that has influenced me, is Hilma af Klint, a female, spiritual, abstract painter, who's work has been overlooked for decades and only recently has had recognition for the monumental scale of her works.
In this series of works, the repetitive mark making, starting from a centre point and moving outwards, creates a meditative space of consciousness, in which I am working with, focusing completely in the present moment. The vivid colours I am using, blue and gold, are signifying the spiritual. I want the viewer to feel a sense of awe, by looking at my painting. I want him/her to feel drawn into it and experience something different, a transcendence. To feel that there is something more thanthe seen reality. The Unseen, that can be only felt through a higher state of consciousness.
